UWMC is one of the nation's leading academic medical centers, which ranks among top 10 in the US best hospitals in multiple areas such as rehabilitation, cancer, diabetes and endocrinology. Many Chinese physicians come here for clinical research. It is worth noting that 1) there is no fee for observation, that 2) the time period is flexible, and that 3) observers can be with multiple providers. So it is also a good choice for visiting scholars to apply for observation program. This article not only summarized the observation program in both UWMC and HMC, but also recommended several leading medical research labs for visiting scholars.
To comply with the continuously increasing demand for international doctor obeservership from Chinese doctors, OCHIS has done an in-depth research and analysis on North American hospitals including Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH),John Hopkins Hospital, Mayo Clinic, UCLA Medical Center, Cleveland Clinic and Brigham and Women's Hospital etc, about their international oberservership programs including length, tuition and requirements. We also have email communication and in-person visits to some of the hospitals above.

Affiliated with Stanford University, Stanford Hospital provides international observership programs in Emergency Medicine and Radiology. As a matter of fact, Emergency Medicine (EM) exists only in a few countries in the world. For doctors from this field, Stanford provides unique experience to obtain skill and resources to become leaders of EM in their home country.
OCHIS Insight: Johns Hopkins Hospital is the top 3 medical center in United States. However, as the affiliated teaching hospital for Johns Hopkins University, which is a top biomedical science institute in United States, Johns Hopkins Hospital seems to emphasize more on scientific research in thier clinical obeservership programs. Previously, OCHIS reviewed the visiting scholar funding opportunities for Chinese physicians, including the funding categories, Chineses government funding opportunities as well as in Europe's. In this article, we mainly focus on review and analysis of visiting scholar funding opportunities provided by the United States. As is well known, medicine technique in the United States is in the leading position worldwide. According to the new Ranking Web of World Hospitals, published by the biggest public research institution in Spain (CSIC), 53 out of the top 100 hospitals are in the United States. When it comes to biomedical research, according to QS World University Rankings, 36 out of the top 100 universities are in the United States. Therefore, the United States is the first choice for visiting scholars in biomedical science field, including both basic science and clinical research. However, after the financial crisis in the United States in 2008, various research funding got shrinked, funding for short-term visiter scholars got reduced and many researchers started to look for positions in Europe. Therefore, OCHIS investigated relavent funding opportunities in the United States, in order to help physicians to visit US for training. The following contents are relative to international visiting scholars, but postdoctoral fellowships.
Europe has world-leading healthcare system, with tremendous strength in basic medical sciences and clinical research. According to a recent report by CSIC, the largest public research body in Spain, 30 out of the top 100 hospitals all around world are located in Europe. In additional, scientific research in Europe is widely supported by the governments, Europe Union and professional organizations, Medical scientists have many opportunities to obtain sufficient funds to support their visiting and studying in Europe. It worth noting that some funding sources have no limitations on applicants’ nationalities provided the visiting institution is inside the Europe, and some funding opportunities are only open to physicians from China and other non-European countries. However, these opportunities are often ignored by Chinese physicians who are preparing for studying aboard. As such, OCHIS has investigated different types of funding sources and summarized their requirements and salaries. Articles in this series will introduce relevant funding provided by four EU professional societies and three government organizations.
